PDRN in Skincare: What 'Salmon DNA' Products Are and What to Expect

Ingredient guide · Al Mahara · Updated 1 Nov 2026

PDRN has become one of the most talked-about ingredients in Korean skincare, often marketed as 'salmon DNA'. You'll now find it in serums, toners, creams, pads and mists.

This guide explains what it is and is honest about what the evidence does and doesn't cover. Sources are linked at the end.

What PDRN is

PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide: short fragments of DNA. A review in Frontiers in Pharmacology describes PDRN as purified from salmon trout or chum salmon sperm DNA, a process designed to remove proteins that could trigger immune reactions.

On skincare labels it often appears as Sodium DNA or PDRN.

Where the evidence comes from

Most research is about PDRN as a medical treatment, for example injected in clinics or used for wound healing. A 2026 systematic review of seven randomized trials (183 participants) found the most consistent benefits in wound healing, with improvements in wrinkle-related outcomes in the rejuvenation studies.

A 2025 review explains that PDRN and the related polynucleotides (PN) are different: PN uses longer DNA fragments. Results from clinic treatments can't be assumed for a serum or cream applied to the skin, where evidence is much thinner.

What PDRN skincare is used for

Brands position PDRN products for hydration, a smoother look and a dewy glow, and most combine PDRN with well-known hydrators such as hyaluronic acid, peptides or panthenol. Choose them for the overall formula and texture you like.

How to use it

  1. Use a PDRN toner after cleansing, or a PDRN serum after toner.
  2. Follow with moisturiser, and sunscreen in the morning.
  3. Test it on a small patch of skin for a week or so first, as the American Academy of Dermatology suggests for any new product.

Good to know

PDRN is usually derived from fish, so check the label if you avoid animal-derived ingredients.
