Korean Skincare Routine for Beginners: Simple Morning and Night Steps
Routine · Al Mahara · Updated 1 Nov 2026
Korean skincare is famous for long routines, but you don't need ten steps. A good routine starts with three things — cleanse, moisturise and protect from the sun — and adds extra steps only when you have a reason for them.
This guide gives a simple morning and night routine, explains what each extra step is for, and shows how to add new products without upsetting your skin. Advice on washing, sunscreen and testing products follows the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD); sources are linked at the end.
Your morning routine
Four steps are enough for most people. Apply products from the thinnest to the thickest.
- Wash with a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water, using your fingertips, then pat dry.
- Optional: a toner or essence for extra hydration.
- Moisturiser.
- Sunscreen as the last step. The AAD recommends a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher every day.

Your night routine
At night the job is to remove the day's sunscreen and makeup, then let your skin recover. Many Korean routines start with an oil or balm cleanser on nights you wear sunscreen or makeup; see our double cleansing guide.
- Cleanse. On sunscreen or makeup days, use an oil or balm first, then your gentle cleanser.
- Optional: toner, essence or a serum for a specific concern.
- Moisturiser.
What toners, essences and serums are for
Korean toners are usually watery, hydrating liquids rather than the stinging astringents some people remember. Essences are a little thicker and also mainly hydrate. Serums and ampoules are more concentrated and are usually chosen for one goal, such as dark spots or redness.
None of these is essential. If your skin feels comfortable with cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen, you can stop there.
Choosing a moisturiser
The AAD explains that gels feel lightest, lotions sit in the middle and creams are thicker and more hydrating. In hot weather, many people prefer a gel cream in the morning and something richer at night.
Add new products one at a time
If you start several products at once and your skin reacts, you won't know which one caused it. Add one new product, use it for a while, then add the next.
The AAD suggests testing a new product on a small spot, such as the inside of your arm, twice a day for seven to ten days before using it on your face. If your skin turns red, itchy or swollen, wash it off and stop using it.
